Erected in 2014, a bronze statue of Kentucky sharpshooter Ephraim Brank stands taking deadly aim, his muzzle pointed south toward the Battle of New Orleans. It was there on January 8, 1815, that he became famous for cooly standing within full view of British officers that he killed, one after another, picking them off their horses, their guns unable to reach him. Across the street, in the Muhlenberg County Public Library Genealogy and Local History Annex, is a life-size cardboard Brank for photo-ops, and his grave -- he lived another 60 years after the battle -- is two blocks east, on Court Row, in the city's old burial ground.
