One of the Vice-President's responsibilities is to administer the oath of office to incoming senators. A bronze relief on the base of the Major General John A. Logan monument depicts VP Chester Arthur discharging his duties and swearing-in the former Civil War commander from Illinois.
The problem: Arthur was Vice-President only in 1881, while Logan's three terms in the senate began in 1871, 1879, and 1885. The historically-inaccurate sculpture shows seven senators observing the ceremony, one of whom, Oliver P. Morton, died four years before Arthur was VP. Two of the other portrayed attendees did not become senators themselves until Arthur was in the White House.
The jumbled timeline was credited to Logan's widow, who wanted these men represented, regardless of authenticity. A win for Chet and his notorious facial hair.
