There's a statue of the sleeping Maytag Repairman in Maytag Park. The Maytag Repairman was a figure in TV commercials. He was always bored and sleeping because Maytag appliances were so reliable that they didn't break down, so nobody ever called the Maytag Repairman.
The unfortunate irony is that the Maytag plant in Newton closed in 2007, idling about 1,700 workers.
