Bayonne, New Jersey: Misshapen Chuck Wepner Mural (Gone)

"The Bayonne Bleeder" went 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali in 1975. The 30-foot-high mural was painted 40 years later. It looks as if someone stuck a 2-D face on a 3-D body. The building owner had the mural painted over on Aug. 20, 2019.

On the north side of W. 33rd St., just west of its intersection with Broadway.
Painted over Aug. 20, 2019.

Misshapen Chuck Wepner Mural

An unfortunately-proportioned mural honors boxer Chuck Wepner, a.k.a. "the Bayonne Bleeder," who still resides in town. Sylvester Stallone was inspired to write the script for Rocky after watching Wepner's 1975 fight against Muhammad Ali, during which the relative unknown from blue-collar Bayonne went 15 rounds with the world heavyweight champion. The building's owner was never told that the 30-foot-high mural would be affixed to his property -- it just showed up one day.

The mural has called attention to hometown hero Chuck since 2015.
