Larissa, Texas: Killough Massacre Monument
"The largest Indian atrocity in East Texas; bodies of the victims who were found were buried here." Ten settlers were killed on Oct. 5, 1838. Some say the killers were Mexicans, but the Cherokee were blamed. The monument, erected 100 years later, is rumored to be frequented by Satanists and ghosts after dark.

- Directions:
- From US-175, 2.5 miles northwest of Jacksonville, turn north at the brown Historical Marker sign onto FM-3405. Drive 4.5 miles. Turn left onto FM-3409, then quickly bear left onto FM-3411, then quickly turn right to stay on FM-3411. Drive three-quarters of a mile, then turn left on FM-3431. The road ends at the monument.

Killough Massacre Monument
Stone obelisk about 30 feet tall marks the site of the last massacre of white settlers by Native Americans in East Texas. On October 5, 1838, 18 settlers were either killed or carried away, "never to be heard of again."
