Anchorage, Alaska: Retired Whirlybird

A 1950s-vintage two-rotor Arctic rescue helicopter sits just inside the entrance to Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, preserved by the cold.

Directions:
Take Hwy 1 north out of Anchorage. Turn off onto N. Muldoon Rd toward the base entrance. Stay in the left lane and turn into the Lowe's shopping center parking lot. The helicopter is just beyond the gatehouse entrance to the base, on the opposite side of N. Muldoon Rd, but if you drive to the back side of the Lowe's you can easily see it across the street.

The helicopter is a 1950s-vintage Piasecki H-21, which was designed as an Arctic rescue helicopter for the U.S. military.
