Texas hero-general and statesman Sam Houston's burial plot in Huntsville's Oakwood Cemetery was surprisingly devoid of much pomp and circumstance for the first five decades after his 1863 death. Then, in 1911, his ordinary gravestone was replaced by a ten-foot-high granite monument carved by Pompeo Coppini. The Italian-born artist incorporated a bas relief of Houston on horseback, flanked by allegorical figures.
The rear of the memorial lists the Texan's extensive resume, but Coppini thought the words of Andrew Jackson, Houston's friend and former commanding officer, sufficed for the front: "The world will take care of Houston's fame."
