Lewes, Delaware: Cannonball House
One of the few reminders of the mostly forgotten War of 1812: an iron cannonball, fired by the British, that lodged in the brick foundation of a Lewes house. Big plaque and sign calls attention to it.

Cannonball House -- a cannonball has remained embedded in the wall close to the sidewalk since 1813, fired at Lewes during the War of 1812.

On April 6th and 7th in 1813, Lewes was bombarded by a British squadron that was part of the Delaware Bay blockade. Several buildings were damaged, including what is now known as The Cannonball House, which still has an iron cannonball lodged in its foundation. It's one of the few surviving local structures that shows wear and tear from the War of 1812.

The cannonball vanished on February 17, 2023, then mysteriously reappeared on a town sidewalk elsewhere in town six days later. It was securely reattached to the house dent in May 2023.
