The mural was painted in May-June 2019 by artist Maggie Keane, a huge Prince fan. She told the Arizona Republic that she began scouting for potential mural-wall locations in Phoenix the day after Prince died in 2016. The work was self-funded by Maggie until she ran out of money halfway through this past May, then a crowdfunding page raised the rest of the cash.
