The Chestatee River Diving Bell enabled miners to stand on underwater river beds and dig for gold! It was only in use from 1875-76. Failing to live up to its promise, it bankrupted its inventor, Philologus Loud. The iron diving bell was left submerged in the river until 2007, then hauled out, restored, and put on display in 2012.
