On March 8, 1860, presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln disembarked at the train station in Woonsocket and later delivered a speech. Rather than erect a run-of-the-mill plaque at the old Woonsocket Train Depot, the city collaborated with Tim Ferland of The Steel Yard to craft an abstract metal memorial. The black powder-coated steel is bent at drastic angles to create a cutout silhouette of the 16th President, including his iconic stovepipe hat. Its design invites visitors to step inside and be enveloped by Abstract Abe. The piece also bears a brief biography of Lincoln and recalls his Woonsocket connection. It was unveiled in July 2019.
