Hinkley, California: Erin Brockovich Town

Town made toxic by PG&E's carcinogenic hexavalent chromium-6 leak was subject of Hollywood's "Erin Brockovich." After 1996 settlement of $333 mil, most residents moved. The utility bought 2/3rd of the land, bulldozed structures, continued cleanup.

Town vestiges spread north and south of CA 58, along Santa Fe Ave and Community Blvd. Drive on public roads. No tourist facilities.

As with most post-disaster environmental/industrial sites -- Love Canal, Centralia, Times Beach -- there are no gift shops or tourist-friendly amenities. If you remember the movie you get some atmospheric context from driving around (and why to spend your vacation elsewhere).
