Early horrific "soft target" mass shooting site. On July 18, 1984, a fired security guard entered a McDonald's and killed 20, wounded 16. The restaurant was later bulldozed. Marble memorial erected to victims; flowers and photos added every anniversary.

Just south of San Diego sits this memorial to a shooting massacre inside and around the McDonald's on the corner of Averil and W. Ysidro Blvd. On July 18, 1984, a gunman killed 21 people and wounded 19 more. A sad day in California history.
