Gerald Hartman, vice-president of the National Sod House Society, has built a metal house around the sod house on his property, which was originally built by Johann Einspahr in the 1800s. Most sod houses have fallen down from wind, rain, burrowing rodents, and livestock looking for a place to rub. Hartman's sod-house-inside-a-house is thought to be one of the best-preserved anywhere.
