It's still there and standing at 2nd Avenue and Court Street, but burnt. It was funny to drive from Louisville, KY to Williamson, WV to see a burnt pile of coal.
[Joy, 05/24/2011]Williamson's Coal House was gutted by a fire in October 2010. The coal part -- the exterior walls and arches -- escaped with almost no damage. The building's entrance is currently boarded up with plywood, but Mingo County plans to start replacing its interior walls, floor, and ceiling in April.
[RoadsideAmerica.com Team, 03/16/2011]Having lived in Williamson all my life, I've been in the coal house before, which is also a hot spot for visitors of the Hatfield-McCoy Marathon every June. What's also interesting is the fountain in front of the coal house, just to the left, that is of Chief Logan, a major historical figure for Mingo and Logan counties. It's full of pennies now, and last Halloween someone put bubblebath in it as joke.
