This statue in downtown Alton honors jazz great Miles Davis -- with his trumpet, super-human long fingers, flashy bell bottom slacks, and signature leaned-back playing stance. Davis was born in 1926 in Alton; at age 18 he moved to NYC to study at Juilliard and begin his career, became a heroin addict, and was credited with the "Birth of Cool."
Davis traveled the world, released over 100 albums, and was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. There were already two Miles Davis statues in Europe when this became the first in the USA, unveiled in 2015.
