Rockport, Texas: The Big Tree

Signs around the tree claim that it's the Texas Champion Live Oak and over 1,000 years old. Encircled by a fence, so no Big-Tree-hugging.

From Rockport drive north across Copano Bay on TX-35. Turn right at the brown Goose Island State Park sign onto TX-13/Main St. Drive straight for 1.5 miles. When you reach the water and the road turns left, follow it for another mile. When the road bends left again, follow it for a hundred yards. You'll see the Big Tree parking area on the right.

The oldest live oak tree in Texas is over 1,000 years old. It's in Goose Island State Park.

A fence surrounds the tree to discourage Big-Tree-huggers from stepping on its ancient roots. A sign suggests "Please take your pictures with other trees nearby."
