Giant Walleye in Walleye Capital of the World

Nice view of lake, giant fish and historical marker!

Giant Walleye

The plaque on the base reads: "Legend has it this walleye was caught by Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox after a three day struggle. Paul finally wrapped his line around Babe's horns and Babe pulled the fish out of Lake Mille Lac and up onto Garrison Beach."

Giant Walleye in Walleye Capital of the World

The Giant Walleye is pretty huge. The paint on the walleye is high quality, so it's beautiful and photographs well. There's a sign posted that says, "Keep off the Walleye" (where else would you see a sign that says that?). It's fun to pose with, and you really need people in the photos for scale.

Large Walleye

Yet another large fiberglass walleye in Minnesota! The walleye sits on a base with "Welcome to Garrison!" on it, and has a stone pavilion to itself with a shorter stone column (can't remember if it was a memorial or anything) behind it. The main thing this particular giant walleye has going for it is the view of Lake Mille Lacs immediately behind it. The pavilion is right on the shoreline. Also, it's conveniently located right on Highway 169 across from McDonalds, for those who want to see a giant walleye and eat lunch in one stop!

[Bailey Anderson, 03/26/2014]

A big fish statue is a public fixture in almost any town claiming to be the Walleye Capital of the World.
