Pacific Grove, California: John Denver Crash Site
On Oct. 12, 1997, the '70s songwriter/performer crashed into the sea while piloting a Rutan Long-EZ experimental plane low on fuel. A memorial boulder with a plaque is at the site of the tragedy.

John Denver was flying a homemade plane, practicing solo landings and takeoffs at Monterey Peninsula Airport, and was just off shore when he ran out of fuel (the cockpit auxiliary tank switch was later determined to be too difficult to reach). The plane crashed, killing the popular music celebrity.
