The Cross River is at Mile Marker 78 on Highway 61. Park just north, at the Father Baraga's Cross Wayside, and walk 0.3 miles to the monument.

Father Baraga's Cross: Boat Miracle

A large stone cross marks the site where Father Baraga erected a small wooden cross in 1846, in thanks for surviving a storm on Lake Superior in a small boat.

Father Baraga was known as "The Snowshoe Priest" and is honored with a giant monument in Michigan. The plaque on this cross, erected by the Knights of Columbus, notes that Baraga's life "was filled with heroism and zeal for souls."
