The fountain design was inspired by a similar, slightly more elaborate dog fountain in Toronto. The water is turned off, and the fountain drained, in winter.

As part of the revitalization of historic downtown Mount Vernon, a fountain was installed in the Fall of 2019 featuring 18 cast aluminum sculptures of dogs circling a golden bone.
