Edwardsville, Illinois: Geodesic Dome Mini-Earth

Built by R. Buckminster Fuller as a kind of daylight planetarium, with the continents painted on the glass and seen in reverse from the inside. Thankfully, someone is usually on hand to explain what it all means.

Fuller Dome

There's a beautiful Fuller dome at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. It is now a kind of church and student center on campus. Open on weekdays. The staff was very friendly and showed us around inside the dome.

[Bryan White, 02/22/2020]

Built in 1971, the "transparent miniature earth" is 40 feet across. "Our planet's continents can be seen accurately outlined against the transparent blue oceans as they would be seen by X-rays if one descended by elevator from Edwardsville to the center of the real earth."
