Not all vice presidential also-rans are memorable, but it'd be hard to forget a trailblazer like Geraldine Ferraro. A three-term representative from New York, she put cracks in the glass ceiling in 1984 by becoming the first woman on a major U.S. political party's presidential ticket. Her selection as Democrat Walter Mondale's running mate was also noteworthy in that she was the first Italian American on a ticket.
The Mondale-Ferraro campaign ended with a resounding electoral defeat. Incumbents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush won every state except Minnesota Mondale's residence.
Ferraro remained involved in politics the rest of her life, and she worked on Senator Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign in 2008. Ferraro died in 2011 and was fondly remembered by politicians on both sides of the aisle. Her grave at St. John Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens, makes note of her pioneering political feat.
