Historical austerity: the 1891 Pinal County Courthouse clock tower features a painted-on clock, forever at 11:44. It's repainted when needed, but the hands are always stuck at the same time.

I asked a few folks in town, including the docents at the local museum, why 11:44? The consensus seems to be that when folks rode into town, the clock would perpetually designate the town as being open for business, having not quite reached the noon lunchtime. I guess that is as good an answer as any!

Beautiful, historic building. Looks like something out of the movies. It is actually hard to tell (at least at night) that the clock faces are painted.
