Ahead of its time, the West Virginia University PRT began transporting college kids in 1975 -- up to 15,000 every day. Each car can hold up to 20 passengers, but in 2000 a record 97 crammed into one.

The WVU-PRT winds its way over 3.5 miles between the three Morgantown campuses of West Virginia University. It was built in the early 1970s by JPL-Boeing as a way to burnish the eco-reputation of President Richard Nixon. That part didn't work, but the PRT itself has been surprisingly durable.
