Guernsey, Wyoming: Register Cliff
For hundreds of years, but mostly in the mid-1800s, emigrants and tourists have chiseled their names into this sandstone cliff. Now it's an official Wyoming park.

- From US-26/Whalen St. in Guernsey, turn south at the cell phone tower (no stoplight) onto Wyoming Ave. Drive 2.5 miles, out of town. Turn left at the brown Register Cliff sign and drive a half-mile to the parking lot.

There is a nice size parking area and port-o-potties so you can stretch your legs, walk the dogs, and see some cool stuff.

Register Cliff is a natural sandstone cliff and was a key navigational landmark on the California, Oregon, and Mormon Trails. Many emigrants chiseled the names of their families into the soft stone of the rock face.
An estimated 500,000 emigrants used these trails from 1843 to 1869, with up to one-tenth dying along the way, usually due to disease.
