A 70-foot-tall German Maypole was built by the citizens of Oldenburg in honor of their German heritage (all of the street signs and store names are in German). The Maypole symbolizes the planting of trees and the awakening of Spring, and many villages celebrate May 1st by decorating the pole and performing ceremonial dances.
The red and yellow striping on this pole are the colors of Oldenburg, and the shields represent important items in the town.
