St. George, Maine: Center of the Universe Monolith

In 1980 Robert Skoglund proclaimed that his front yard was the Center of the Universe and built a 16-foot-high granite monolith to prove it. He still lives there.

Center of the Universe Monolith

Maine humorist "The Humble Farmer" (Robert Skoglund) and his wife Marsha own the Humble Farmer Bed and Breakfast. His wit and humor can be found everywhere on their property. Going by the prophecy that "If you can't prove it to be, and if you can't prove it not to be, it could be," he proclaimed that his front yard is the Center of the Universe. Forty years ago, he built a 16-foot-high granite monolith with a monkey playing a trumpet at the top. "I had never built anything like that and I expected it to fall over in three years," he told me.

If you get the chance to talk with "Humble," please take the time to do so. He's a celebrity in the state and will be the first to tell you so! He's a hoot.
