Small granite marker memorializes the tunnel miners killed on Oct. 17, 1867, when fire and flooding destroyed their vent shaft.

- From MA-2 turn south onto Central Shaft Rd. Follow 1.3 miles to the memorial, which is on the right across the street from the brick vent shaft building. The memorial is a low-to-the-ground granite marker that can be easily missed.

On October 17, 1867, during construction of the Hoosac Tunnel, 13 miners were 583 feet down a shaft that they were working on when a fire accidentally started near the surface. The burning shaft, hoist mechanism, and many tools fell onto the men, killing some. Subsequent flooding of the shaft killed the rest.
The memorial is a low-to-the-ground granite marker that can be easily missed.
