Halfway Marker - 45th Parallel
We missed seeing the marker the first time we drove past, but then we spotted it. If traffic is light you can pull off briefly to the side of the road for a fast picture.
[Perfect Pair, 07/06/2013]Halfway to North Pole plaque
Back in 1999, we were heading south from Escanaba to Green Bay when we saw the plaque in the photo. We don't usually photograph signs, but this one is an exception. It marks the halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole! It seems to have been placed by a private citizen, but that's all on the plaque. It's been there since 1938 -- the plaque, not the the halfway point.
[Les Parker, 03/09/2003]You may not realize halfway monuments run in a belt across the US.... there's one on the 45th parallel in Perry, ME and another in Salem, OR. Poking through our files, it looks like some towns have been very proud of their halfway status. Cadott, WI promoted its position (actually 3 miles north of town) with a postcard circa 1970 and a billboard, erected by the Lions, featuring info and a big western hemisphere to prove point.
