Emil Ambos was a liquor wholesaler and a tavern owner. Fishing was one of his major pleasures. When he died in 1898 with no immediate family, he established two endowments so that his friends could attend a large fish dinner in his memory, and commissioned a grave statue of himself fishing.
The statue was completed in 1901, but by the 1990s it was starting to show signs of deterioration. It was shot at, and some of the sculpted fish on his fishing pole and in the bucket were stolen. The cemetery hired Ohio artist Mike Major to restore the sculpture, which included fabricating fish to replace those that had been stolen.
