[Jennifer, 03/28/2024]43-Foot-Tall Our Lady of Fatima in a Yacht Club
Once the centerpiece of a 1960s-era Catholic theme park (complete with music, fountain, and slowly rotating Our Lady), this impressive monument -- said to be one of the tallest statues of Mary in the U.S. -- now presides over the yacht club that took its place, albeit without the music, rotation, and waterworks. The theme park and statue were the creations of George B. Quatman, who wanted an atmosphere of good Catholic fun on the lake (no alcohol or rock 'n' roll). Follow the curve around the boat sheds and you will see her very impressive enclosure, as well as a tidy little garden ringed with the Stations of the Cross.
[Kitsa, 06/26/2021]According to Mary's accompanying plaque, the amusement park operated from 1964 until 1984. "Mr. Quatman died one month after its opening."
