Le Roy, New York: Marion Steam Shovel

This rusty relic, which may have helped dig the Panama Canal, is believed to be the largest intact steam shovel. Convenient for steam shovel fan visits since 1949!

Directions:
From downtown Le Roy drive east on Main St./NY-5 for two miles. Turn left onto Circular Hill Rd. Drive one mile. Turn right onto Gulf Rd. Drive one mile. You'll see the steam shovel on the left, opposite the entrance to the quarry.

Marion Steam Shovel

The Old Model 91 steam shovel, the only surviving one in the world, required a crew of eight workers. Once in operation it could excavate up to 2000 tons per day(!) of crushed stone for the railroad network.

Built in the first years of the 20th century, the Marion Steam Shovel is believed to be the largest intact steam shovel in the world, and may have helped dig the Panama Canal. It's been parked in this roadside spot since 1949.
