Remnant of the USS Maine

At the corner of Portage Road and Pine Avenue stands a statue of a soldier that fought in the Spanish-American War. One of the plaques on this statue's base was made from metal recovered from the USS Maine, which was destroyed in Cuba's Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898.

A number of these plaques were made of melted-down Maine wreck metal and distributed to various cities; only a few are still on public view.
