Folk Art Cemetery

Madrid is a former coal mining community which became a ghost town before artists moved in and took over in the 1970s. The graveyard atop the mesa overlooking the town reflects this history, with mounds of stones marking early graves and a plethora of funky markers for modern graves (The woman who recommended the stop stated that many of the markers were created by the deceased for themselves). The graveyard is full of fire pits and benches, making it somewhere that you can stay for a while to pay your respects and enjoy the scenery.
