Replica Temperance Fountain
The Women's Christian Temperance Union was an organization against the drinking of liquor. They are still in existence today. One of the main causes of people drinking alcohol was that drinking water 100 years ago was sometimes unsanitary and often did not taste very good, so the group began erecting Temperance Fountains across the country to give folks a good, clean alternative to liquor.
The fountain in Leesburg was built in 1929 in the center of town, but was accidentally destroyed in the 1960s when a nearby building was demolished. The local historical society was able to salvage the small metal fountain, and a replica of its original rock arch was built in 2019.
