Hermann the German -- not a cartoon character, but a historical leader who beat the Romans -- has brandished his Teutonic battle sword over New Ulm since 1897. Climb the stairs to stand at his mighty feet.

There's a stone commemorating the designation of the Hermann Monument as an official symbol recognizing the contributions of German Americans.

It's $2.75 to enter and climb to the top. It's free to look from outside the fence. If you're afraid of heights, save your money -- it's higher than it looks. There are a couple of enclosed picnic shelters with screens and windows for inclement weather. And there is a really nice playground nearby too. No bathrooms, though.
