This sculpture at the Flight of Five canal locks, by local artist Susan Geissler, was created from a 1897 photograph. Her sculpture also includes the photographer who took that photo. It makes for a great selfie to include yourself with those lock tenders, provided your camera has a timer!

One of the most iconic sites along the Erie Canal is Lockport's famous Flight of Five locks. Locks 69 and 70 were originally completed in 1849; their massive hand-operated wooden gates were just recently restored. The still-active Locks 34 and 35 have equally massive steel doors that allow modern boats to traverse the Niagara Escarpment. There are several canal-related sites nearby, and the pedestrian-only Canal Street overlooks the Erie Canal.
