Lexington, Oklahoma: Spider VW Bug
A car made to look like a bug. Formerly 15 feet high, but now sagging. Built by Monte Bodine in 1973-74. At the time, the now-empty filed where the bug stands was the world's largest VW salvage yard.

Lots of cockleburs or sandspurs in the surrounding grass. The bug is looking a little older, and needs a can of paint.

[Kim, 02/11/2018]What makes this worth visiting for me is that my grandfather, Monte Bodine, built this for his good friend Leroy Wilson, who owned the VW salvage and land. The spider was built somewhere between 1973 and 1974, not 1979. Unfortunately my grandfather passed three years ago -- otherwise I would have him tell you himself.

I love "Slug Bugs" but can't stand spiders, so I was pretty excited about the Spider Bug! Our GPS was off a little and we kept driving about a quarter of a mile and found it next to a church on the left side of the road. I had so much fun and loved it! Wasn't too far out of the way and was pretty easy to find. I definitely think it was worth the detour, but my boyfriend was expecting more.
