A monument on a downtown sidewalk marks the spot where the pole stood where the wires were joined that connected the transcontinental telegraph in 1861. It killed off the Pony Express.

Sitting on the east side of Main Street, kinda in front of Forever 21. The plaque is a little hard to read, so you may need to bring a light if you don't visit in the middle of the day. If you aren't looking, you might miss it.
Then go south a little bit -- there is a monument commemorating the Pony Express.
