There is an explanatory plaque attached to arch about its significance. Came on a Sunday and figured things would be closed. But it seems the town has closed lots of businesses. People were very friendly though, and the Hi-Low Cafe is super yummy.

The Weed entrance sign is on the corner of Main St. and US-97 (aka South Weed Boulevard).

We drove down I-5 to L.A. and had to stop at this town. The "Weed like to welcome you" sign is fantastic; you have to take a picture! They have an awesome gift shop with all sorts of fun "weed" items, at really good prices. Really nice people :) I loaded up on stuff for my friends and family. Main Street also has some nice-looking shops, but we came into town at 5:30 pm, so several were closed. I highly recommend this stop if you like name humor!

Curator "Lanay" has sold the Weed Souvenir shop to Mark and Cindy, who have embraced the irony (and enduring popularity) of the town's enigmatic name. Now referred to simply as The Weed Store, it's definitely worth checking out.
The town is actually named for its founder, Abner Weed... but that fact is cheerfully unimportant to the thousands of people who pull over to get their picture taken next to the WEED CITY LIMITS signs and the big WELCOME TO WEED arch.
[james gilmore, 07/08/2012]Exiting one of the main freeway exits to this town on I-5 results in viewing the painfully "punny" sign: "WEED LIKE TO WELCOME YOU." Follow this same road down just a couple of blocks to the Shasta Mountain Gift Store, which features WEED souvenirs galore -- including "ENJOY WEED, CA" t-shirts, bumper stickers, etc. The best find, however, is talking to the curator - Lanay - who claims she's "been here for 50 years, and boy isn't this cool?" Very animated and eccentric.
