Carolina Beach, North Carolina: Grave of the Fort Fisher Hermit
Robert E. Harrill died in 1972, but visitors still seek out this small, hidden cemetery to leave trinkets on his grave. His epitaph: "He Made People Think."

- Directions:
- From US-421/N. Lake Park Blvd, heading south, turn right at the stoplight (look for the water tower) onto Dow Rd/NC-1573. Drive two miles. After you pass Ocean Blvd on the left, drive another quarter-mile and you'll see, on the right, a gated pull-off with a cemetery sign. Park outside the gate and walk back to the cemetery. The hermit's grave marker is flush with the ground.
