Nilwood, Illinois: Turkey Tracks on Route 66

When this tiny rural road, later to become an original part of Route 66, was paved between 1920 and 1922, a turkey walked in the wet cement. A white box has been painted around the 34 historical turkey tracks, and a wooden turkey cutout marks the entry spot.

Turkey Tracks on Route 66

This roadside attraction is why we love America and why we love the Roadside America app. Well worth the detour, after leaving Springfield, Illinois, to go home to the St. Louis area.
