The Fairview Lift Bridge was built in 1913 by the Great Northern Railroad. The state required that it be built as a lift bridge to accommodate steamboats on the Yellowstone River. Since the steamboats ceased operation once the rails were in place, the bridge was never lifted except for a test on completion. The tracks were pulled up in the 1980s and the bridge is now a walking trail that leads to North Dakota's only railroad tunnel.
