Monmouth, Maine: Big Farmyard Rooster

Unlike most other mass-produced big roadside roosters, this one is actually on a farm.

269 Cobbossee Rd, Monmouth, ME
From Hwy 132 on the south end of Monmouth, turn east at the post office onto Maple St. Drive 1.5 miles. You'll pass a baseball diamond on the right, continue over a small hill, and on the far side, just past Prescott Hill Rd, on the left, in front of an old farmhouse, is the rooster.

Big Farmyard Rooster

The rooster is still there in the front yard of the house. The directions are spot on from the address given, but I'm pretty sure that 269 is the street number, and the street name is definitely Cobbossee Road.

Big Chicken Statue

The Big Chicken is still strutting his stuff; this has been a Monmouth landmark for at least 40+ years at nearly the same location. It was moved closer to the house some 25 years ago when a high school class took it for a ride, and later someone clipped off his beak (debeaked?) with a chain saw (it has since been rebeaked).

Big Chicken Statue

We searched and searched for the elusive big chicken statue in and around Monmouth and Manchester but the chicken had flown the coop. Even local residents thought we were a few eggs short of a dozen when we asked where we might find the towering chicken.

Big Chicken - Crosses the road

The Big Chicken has been moved off the road into someone's yard. The owner of the Giant Drumsticks doesn't see what all the fuss is, but is very accommodating as long as people are respectful.
