Sydney S. Hastings placed a big stone at the geographical center of Michigan's lower peninsula in 1876. The rock, and its bronze plaque, still stands there today in Clapp Park at the corner of Washington and Franklin Streets. There are a couple of other fun monuments in this park as well, like the Temperance Bench.
