Grand Marais, Minnesota: Canoehead Sign

An old sign supposedly marking the entrance to the Gunflint Trail features a headless buckskin-clad voyageur with a canoe balanced on his shoulders. It's the proper way to portage a canoe, but no one said you can't laugh at it.

Canoe head.

Gunflint Trail Sign

A headless voyageur walks with a canoe on his head.

[Don Nickel, 05/11/2023]

Oddly "Canoehead" does not actually mark the entrance to the Gunflint Trail road, which starts about a half-mile further east. A similarly hilarious bear-in-a-boat artwork on the opposite side of 2nd Ave. appears to have fallen apart.
