The Cross of Lorraine was built in November 1953 as a symbol of hope and a reminder of the threat of tuberculosis, which at the time was running rampant in the area. Across the street is the empty lot where once stood the Hamilton Sanitorium, opened in 1906 to treat TB patients. Doctors wanted a location with plenty of fresh air in a tranquil setting to try to help the victims breathe, because there was no cure.
