There is a statue of Leif Ericson at the entrance to the Mariner's Museum and Park. On the statue's base his name is spelled as Leifr Eiriksson. This is a copy of a statue given to the U.S. by the government of Iceland in 1930, and was presented to Newport News by the Eiriksson Memorial Committee of the National League Of Icelanders in America.
Ericson never made it as far south as Virginia, but he is believed to be the first European to set foot in North America, and the committee felt that a statue of him would be an appropriate addition to the Park.
