Prince, West Virginia: Monument to Smokeless Coal
A 25-foot-high, 55-ton pillar of granite marks the spot where "the first New River Smokeless Coal was mined," making local coal baron Joseph Lawton Beury a millionaire.

- On the south side of WV-61/Stanaford Rd, either 10 miles east of its intersection with WV-16 in Mount Hope, or 11.5 miles west of its intersection with WV-31 in Danese. The monument is set back from the highway, just east of a tan-colored house and its detached garage.

Probably 150 ft or so off the road and down a small hill; you can only see the top of it from the road. According to a nearby property owner, it is maintained by the National Park Service. It is surrounded by a mostly intact iron fence with the Beury name. Two lane road taking you there has a bit of designated parking for the monument. Near the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.
